Plant Science
The Department of Plant Biology is home to the Basic Plant Sciences on campus.
The Department has 31 Faculty including members from other Cornell Departments, the USDA Plant, Soil & Nutrition Laboratory and The Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research. Research in the Department is also supported by some 24 postdoctoral fellows and research associates.
In addition, the Department of Plant Biology administers the Graduate Field of Plant Biology, a successful interdisciplinary Ph.D. training program that produces some of the top leaders in Plant Biology Research & Education.

Plant Biology $7M NSF Maize Shoot Apical Meristem Study
Michael Scanlon awarded $7 million by the National Science Foundation for his study, "Genetic networks regulating structure and function of the maize shoot apical meristem." Scanlon leads a team of nine researchers who study the maize shoot apical meristem (SAM) -- a pool of plant stem cells responsible for forming essentially all of the above-ground parts of the corn plant. Weiss Presidential Fellow
Karl Niklas has been named a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell. The Weiss Presidential Fellowship is awarded for excellence in teaching and advising undergraduates. The award is named for Stephen H. Weiss '57, former chair of the Cornell Board of Trustees. The recipients will be honored by the Cornell Board of Trustees in the Spring of 2013.
Margaret Frank is pursuing her PhD in Professor Mike Scanlon's lab. Her thesis project is to compare gene expression patterns across structurally and evolutionarily diverse shoot meristems.
